High Wycombe and the surrounding areas were popular as stopping points for travellers going between London, Oxford and other significant towns. This popularity came at a price, the high volume of wealthy travellers, merchants and tradesmen attracted the attention of highwaymen; thieves who would use brutality and murder as a means of business.
