“The village of Pluckley was once listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the UK’s most haunted village, with 12 reported ghosts. Just one pub in Old Amersham equals that record.” — Ashley Darkwood, Paranormal Investigator
Old Amersham, Buckinghamshire, is a historic market town steeped in both documented history and enduring tales of the paranormal. Many of the town’s most significant historical events appear to have left a lasting and unsettling imprint — one that continues to be reported by witnesses to this day.
The earliest known settlement in Amersham dates back to 796 AD, with evidence also suggesting Roman activity in the area. In the early 1500s, the town became infamous for the brutal persecution of the Amersham Martyrs, also known as the Lollards, who were imprisoned, tried, and executed for their beliefs. It is perhaps no coincidence that locations connected to these events are among those most frequently associated with unexplained activity.
Over the years, numerous accounts have emerged from local establishments, including reports from chambermaids and bar staff of disturbing “hands-on” encounters — people being touched, grabbed, or brushed by unseen forces. Historical records also show that Amersham’s residents held a deep fear of witchcraft, adding another dark layer to the town’s past.
This guided walk explores Amersham’s grim history, reported hauntings, local legends, and recent unexplained encounters. We visit sites where witnesses have reported apparitions, disembodied voices, screams, poltergeist activity, and physical contact from invisible hands.
The first tour took place in 2015, and since then both locals and visitors have continued to come forward with their own experiences. The tour is constantly evolving, informed by ongoing research into Amersham’s history and its extensive catalogue of paranormal reports.
In 2020, elements of our tour research were adapted into a synopsis for an episode of the paranormal documentary World’s Most Unexplained, which aired internationally on the Discovery Network. A clip can be viewed at the bottom of this page.
