Ashley Darkwood - Paranormal Investigator & Researcher- Haunted Historian
Born in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, I was introduced to the Spiritualist tradition at an early age, attending Wycombe Spiritualist Church with my mother from the age of five. As a teenager, I began giving psychic readings for friends and gradually developed an interest in mediumship. At sixteen, I carried out my first investigation into a reported paranormal incident. I was regularly asked to assess alleged hauntings in private homes, where I often found that seemingly paranormal experiences had rational, non-paranormal explanations. Alongside this, a lifelong involvement in martial arts nurtured a strong interest in Eastern philosophy and disciplined self-study.
I went on to spend many years working within the NHS and Social Services in community psychiatric care. This experience proved invaluable, equipping me with a deep understanding of perception, belief, distress, and vulnerability, skills that are essential when supporting individuals who believe they are encountering unexplained phenomena.
My approach to paranormal investigation differs markedly from conventional ghost hunting. Rather than attempting to prove the existence of the paranormal, I focus on identifying the underlying causes of reported activity. I am openly sceptical of many popular ghost-hunting devices, which I consider unreliable for serious investigative work. My priority is not spectacle, but clarity, helping clients achieve understanding, reassurance, or resolution. For this reason, I do not approach cases as a medium, having seen firsthand the anxiety and harm that can arise when unsubstantiated claims or false information are presented as fact.
I have since gained recognition as a paranormal researcher and "haunted historian" across print, radio, and television, contributing analysis and research to a range of productions. My work has been featured in several major television series, and my research has been widely drawn upon behind the scenes by production teams. In addition, I lead ghost and haunted history tours throughout London and the south-east of England, balancing reported hauntings with rigorous historical context. Alongside this work, I have also appeared in television and film as both an actor and a stunt performer.
